Miami Beach’s Art Basel 2021

Hello, Voyagers!

Miami is like a whole ‘nother country. And I mean that with all the love. And Art Basel weekend? Like a trip to Mars. It’s a short trip that feels like a month by the time you head back to the airport.

Day one started with landing at Miami’s airport and meeting up with some people to head to South Beach and this sunset bar:

Hint: Get the lobster roll.

And that wasn’t even dinner! No, dinner was at a super-chic place called Chica. The guacamole might be, like, $30 or something, but hey, it’s Miami right?

And just when you think you’re done for the night, you & your friends get invited into a speakeasy club and find yourself stayin’ a while and hanging out with super-cool, super-chill celebrity chef Lawrence Page. And you’ll find yourself back there the next night!

whose motorcycle is this?

It’s a chopper, baby.

South Beach at christmastime

…You’re still warm, but surrounded by holiday decor. Delightful.

Lots of strange things are afoot in South Florida. One of these at the Miami Art Basel weekend turned out to be a party at the Arsenale celebrating the launch of a prototype for the world’s first all-electric personal water craft.

Pretty f**king cool, huh?

This party included meeting internationally famous surfers. Like this guy, who could NOT have been nicer. How do I know he’s so nice? ‘Cause I (knowing nothing about surfing and wanting to break the ice) jokingly asked him if he were indeed a famous person and he, very sweetly, said no*. Plus, he posed willingly for this pic:

*Spoiler alert: Garrett is super-famous.

How do I know that? There’s literally an HBO doc about him.

Then there’s the art. Oh, my, the art.

Here’s a sample of some of the art from Art Basel, Untitled, & the event at Arsenale. Photo credit for most of these goes to @savage_in_seattle!

This piece stopped me in my tracks.

Did I touch the artwork?

Nope.

Did I want to?

You betcha.

i could not stop staring at this sculpture. Jaw-dropping.

From the blue skies to the perfect weather in December, I gotta say, I’m a fan of South Florida (not something I ever thought I would find myself saying!) The food was amazing. The art was amazing. The views? You guessed it. Amazing.

Art Basel Miami: My first was unforgettable. And I hope it isn’t my last.
